This is just a general knowledge inquiry why are masters in some hunts called pink coats? when they mostly wear red is there a reason or is it just slang

This alledgedly goes back to a tailor called "Pinque", who possibly made hunt coats.
There is a correct way of describing the colour of hunt coats, that I shall not go in to.

Coward. But I share the fear.
They are red or scarlet. There is a venomous school of pedantry that decrees that the word "coat" must always be connected to one of these colours but not the other one.
But not "jacket". And not pink.

I asked the same question to an old master of foxhounds some 30 years ago. He said...Pink is what you call Gin and Red is what you call a hunt coat.
Was he right? was he wrong? all I know is I always call hunt coats ....Red.
hope that helps?

the search facility here is a bit clunky, but I'm guessing it'll be buried in the 13 pages of this thread somewhere:

I was told earlier this season, that when packs of hounds were privately owned by the gentry, the huntsman wore the family's livery, then when packs were formed by commoners, who didn't have their own livery, they started wearing red coats made by Pinks the taylors in London.

Yep, that's the one. Most of the meat of the BS on this particular topic comes in the last few pages...

If you can find the other thread there is quite a bit of detail The thread linked above is not the main one, which includes "Pink" in the title. I also came across someone has done some quite extensive research into London tailors, dressmakers and so on in the 18th and 19th Century and can find no reference to a tailor called "Pink".
The term "Pink" was a slang term used to refer to an 18th Century dandy and there is also reference however to a ficticious tailor "Pink" in an 18th Century play which is where the legend is reckoned to originate.
The current "Thomas Pink" chain of mens fashion outlets is unrelated and began only at the latter part of the 20th Century.
There are plenty of other slang terms used in hunting and country sports. "Charlie" referring to the fox is from Charles James Fox, a Whig statesman made notorious for his support of the French Revolution.

I thought that they went hunting in their warmest coat which was often their old army coat.
If we had invented hunting now we would all be in desert camoflage
